Indian Athletics news!!!

INDIAN GRAND PRIX

Indian relay team turned in its second record-breaking performance in a month to place itself on the cusp of qualifying for the Rio Olympics at the Shriram Properties third Indian Grand Prix at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium on Sunday.
The team of P. Kunhumohammed, Mohammed Anas, A. Dharun and Arokia Rajiv clocked an impressive 3.00.91s to better its own time of 3:02.17s set in Erzurum, Turkey in June. With an average time of 3.01.54s, India is now 13th – at the time of going to press – in the list of 16 elite nations eligible to compete.
Its position may still change based on the results at the ongoing European Athletics Championships in Amsterdam. However, it will get another chance on Monday, if need be, to ensure a top-16 spot.
After the effort in Turkey, the team was expected to put on a good show at the Inter-State meet in Hyderabad recently. But a slow final changeover put paid to those hopes. In Bengaluru, though, there was to be no such trouble as the team came up with a near-flawless act.
“We have practised very hard for the last one and a half years,” said an ecstatic Rajiv after the race. “We kept trying and it finally clicked. We have to thank AFI [Athletics Federation of India] for all the help.”
“We were confident about the women’s team. But didn’t expect such a timing from the men’s team,” said AFI Secretary C.K. Valson. “It’s a very very good performance.”
The women’s 4x400m relay team’s position was unchanged on 12th. But the group of Nirmala Sheoran, Tintu Luka, M.R. Poovamma and Anilda Thomas clocked 3:27.88s, its fastest in the qualification period thus far. A similar performance on Monday, if warranted, can confirm a Rio berth.
However, the women’s 4x100m team, comprising Dutee Chand, ran a disappointing 44.34s (against its top two times of 43.42s and 44.03s) primarily owing to a slow changeover from H.M. Jyothi to Srabani Nanda. It will require a massive effort on the final day of the Grand Prix series to make the cut.
Elsewhere, the only one who raised hopes of qualification was V. Neena in the women’s long jump. Against a required mark of 6.70m, she recorded a wind-assisted leap of 6.57m on her second attempt. But she frittered away from there on, with distances of of 6.50m, 6.33m and 6.28m.
However, the AFI decided to add long jump to the list of events on Monday to give Neena one final opportunity. Women’s 800m has also been added to the list possibly to give M. Gomathi a chance.

Indian Tennis news !!

Yuki Bhambri still awaits his return on pro circuit.

10 July,2016.       Indian tennis ace Yuki Bhambri turned 24 on July 4th.The Tennis star is out of action for a little while with the re emergence of the same injury which demanded him a 3 months complete rest  late last year .
The current update is also not a pleasing one as he mentions "his pain hasn't subsided " so he is unlikely to be able to play the Challengers in the US later this month. Which all in all sums up that if he is trying to get fit for the US Open qualies then it would mean he will head to the Flushing meadows without any match practice under his belt.
Or in other scenario he would remain patient till the mid September 2016 and avail injury break protected ranking

Sai Praneeth had 3 match points at 20-17 in the third game but lost 5 straight points. Another case of mental breakdown by Indian players ? We are seeing this too often in case of Indian players in badminton and tennis.

[QF] (4) Ajay JAYARAM (IND,24) vs. Anand PAWAR (IND,86)

So, an Indian semi finalists is ensured. Also our second seeded mens doubles pair of Manu Atri/Sumeeth Reddy and womens doubles pair of Meghna/ Poorvisha Ram have made the QF

Indian Boxing updates!!!!

APB/WSB Olympic Qualifying Tournament on Jul 3 -  8 in Vargas, Venezuela.

3 Indians fought for a Rio berth.

They were Bidhuri(52kg), Neeraj(69kg) & Dilbagh(81kg).

Dilbagh and Bidhuri were ousted in their respective 1st round matches while neeraj won his bout to the enter the semis but his opponent got better of him in pre championship bout but still he has a chance to make it to the Rio by fighting it out for the third place......

There were incredibly small player fields in these olympics qualifiers for pro boxers. For instance, in 49 kgs, there were only 7 competitors and 3 got  quota. When Devendro was robbed in the last olympic qualifiers there were as many as 30 boxers and only 2 qualifiers. I wish we had more boxers competing here.

Our boxers needed to win 2 bouts to qualify.

India at Rio Olympics 2016!!!!!

Sajan Prakash (Men's 200m Butterfly) and Shivani Singh (Women's 200m Freestyle) for getting selected to represent India at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games on wild-cards.

Indian tennis Results!!!!

At $50K Todi Challenger,Italy (clay)

Ramk could not come up with his A game and got humbled against the Italian. But he played a very good match against the clay court specialist in his local conditions

[R2] (Q) Ramkumar Ramanathan (IND,231) l. (2) Marco Cecchinato (ITA,130) 67(6) 46

His backhand is still too weak for players at this level. Marco realised that and started serving high kicking serves on RamK backhand which RamK found it impossible to return. To compensate that he stood too much in the backhand corner at times and Marco hit aces in forehand corner. All in all, in second set RamK posed no threat on Marco serve and only his big serve kept him close in this set.

Hockey updates!!!

At six nation cup ,Valencia

We drew with Argentina 3-3. I did not watched the match but got a recorded commentary  and we were down 1-3 at half time which means we must have gone to same old days playing like sloths. Even at the start of second half . There was no goals in the 3rd Quarter and seemed an Argentine victory But, last quarter we pressed really hard and got 2 goals

Still, in the end a satisying result against a team to which we have crumbled down every now and then

The umpiring was pathetic as we were denied  1-2 Pc's and a goal too
